Google has been working to condense the clutter in our
inboxes for some time and has just declared a significant update to Gmail, both
on the web and on mobile, to further combat the trouble. The update brings tabbed inboxes to your
Gmail that automatically divide the mail you receive into categories.
According to the official Gmail blog, you'll be able to
select which categories will be enabled as tabs (Social, Promotions, Updates,
or Forums, as well as "Primary" for your classic inbox). The tabs
will show you how many new emails you have for each category and offer another
way to classify your inbox. You'll be able to drag-and-drop messages between
tabs and set specific senders to always appear in a certain tab.
They can choose to keep mails from a exacting sender to
always appear in a particular tab and can star them so that they also appear in
the Primary tab. So, users would be able to keep update emails from their
social networks under one tab, while they can keep their personal mails in one,
mails regarding to forum threads in another and business mails in another tab.
The new redecorate will be rolled out regularly and
will become accessible within the next few weeks, according to Google. Users
might even get early access to the redesign on the desktop interface and can
switch to it via the ‘Configure inbox’ option in the settings. So they can keep
a watch on the gear menu.
The new update will also be sent out to Gmail for
Android "within the next few weeks". The new Android application will
support the tabs by placing them in a left sidebar which you can take to in
order to choose which inbox to view.
