Apple
looks to be getting ready to launch Apple TV in India, as the streaming media
player has found its way to the official Apple India website. The listing
quotes the price of the device as Rs 7,900. It was first speckled by BGR India.
However, Apple has not declared a formal press announcement. We also contacted
an Apple premium reseller to check availability but they were not aware of the
launch.
Apple
TV is a digital box that brings iTunes Store content to televisions and also
helps connect iDevices to the bigger display with Airplay. With the launch of
the iTunes Store in India late last year, it was only a matter of time before
Apple launched the Apple TV. It seems that Apple’s “hobby” is becoming much
more than a hobby, mainly if Apple launches it across all the 56 countries
where it rolled out the iTunes Store last year.
Apple
in recent times launched its iTunes store in India. The launch of Apple TV thus
makes it clear in our minds that Apple does have some plans for the country. We
wrote earlier about how Apple was making inroads into the country and may
finally look at increasing its presence in the country.
I,
conversely, do not see Apple TV or any other multimedia streaming TV being
adopted enthusiastically soon. The popular of the TV watching population in
India is hooked to Satellite television. Providers should make content
accessible on services like YouTube or equivalent apps and then both platforms
could be seen as equal in terms of content. Another problem is the average low
Internet speeds in the country. This will keep products like these limited to
cities. However, it is nice to know that if and when we transition to web based
content viewing, we will have a range of devices to choose from.
Apple
TV will contend with cheaper offerings from Western Digital and a host of other
cheaper Android and custom-OS based media players/ streamers. While these media
players are great for playing content you may have acquired from 'other'
sources, Apple TV has flawless iTunes Store addition going in its kindness.
