Facebook Released New Graph Search

Facebook assumed a big press event this morning. It only sent out invitations to it last week, and when it did, it didn’t disclose the topic. But in a sense, everyone who pays close notice to Facebook has been waiting for this event for most of the site’s history, because the subject was Graph Search, the social network’s first truly serious search characteristic.

What is Graph Search?

Graph Search is a new way for you to find people, photos, places and interests that are most relevant to you on Face book.

What is Graph Search useful for?

Graph Search will help you instantly find others, learn more about them and make connections, explore photos, quickly find places like local attractions and restaurants, and learn about common interests like music, movies, books and more. All results are unique based on the strength of relationships and connections.

What can I search for?

With Graph Search, you can search for people, photos, places and interests.

How do I search?

Type your search into the blue bar at the top of the page. As you start to type, suggestions appear in a drop down. You can refine your search using the tools on the right-hand side of the page.

“As people shared more and more content, we saw that we needed to give them better ways to explore and enjoy those stories and memories,” they wrote.

Some example searches include:

• People who like cricket and live nearby
• Photos before 1994
• Photos of my friends in Australia
• Guajarati restaurants in Palo Alto my friends have liked
• Tourist attractions in India visited by my friends

The Graph Search tool, which the company calls graph search, is Face book’s most motivated stab at overturning the Web search business ruled by its chief rival, Google. It is also an effort to elbow aside other Web services designed to unearth specific kinds of information, like LinkedIn for jobs, Match for dates and Yelp for restaurants.

More important, it isn’t a fully fleshed-out idea. This first version helps you find people, photos, interests and places, but there’s lots of stuff on Facebook it doesn’t know about yet. It doesn’t search status updates, for instance, and it’s not hooked into Face book’s Open Graph, which ties the site together with third-party services such as spottily. It also doesn’t work in Face book’s mobile apps yet. Zuckerberg says that Face book’s to-do list for Graph Search should keep the company busy for the next several years.

The search team was led by two former Google engineers, Lars Rasmussen and Tom Stocky. As they explained in a blog post on the Facebook Engineering Department page, graph search solves a problem of Face book’s own making: it has collected so much information.
