Recently, India has been witnessing protests
across the country against brutal rapes, molestation and mistreatment of women.
Despite the protests and measures, crimes are on an alarming rise. It’s tough
for today’s women to walk alone in the streets. Hence, it’s high time for them
to be cautious and ensure precautionary measures for their safety. The IT
industry in the country is doing every bit possible for this by coming up with
new innovative apps that offer lot more than just security.
bSafe
is an amazing safety app that provides timely and precise information during
emergencies to the mobile numbers previously chosen by the user. The app is
loaded with several helpful features to make you safe. The app is particularly
easy to use. To begin the setup, the app would ask you to provide the name and
number of the person whom you wish to contact in times of emergency. You can
add as many people guardians as you want. The app offers two modes of contact
SMS and voice. SMS notification is absolutely free for all guardians, but voice
notification is limited to one person only. You can add more people for voice
notification with yearly or monthly subscription.
“Hollaback!
You have the power to end street harassment”, is the tag line of this
particular app. Here the users can take a photo of the harasser and upload it
as ‘caught in the act’ and submit their story on ihollaback.org. It signals the
perpetrator that his photo is shared on the website as well as warns others
from doing this act. The app encourages users to submit stories along with
photographs of street harassment at every level from catcalls to strangers
groping hands or even individuals exposing themselves in public roads. It is a
free version which is available in both iPhone and Android phones. Apart from
apps and website, Hollaback is part of an international movement with nearby
based Hollaback organizations in major cities and metropolitan areas across 18
countries. It tries to create a crowd- sourced initiative to end street
harassment and break the silence to bring notice to the women safety issues.
As
the name would suggest, this app allows you to pick six of your closest friends
to add to your circle. If you feel unsafe or uncomfortable in any condition
then this app would help you to send a pre-programmed SMS alert message along
with your exact location to all your friends (included in the circle) with just
two taps. This way, you can always stay close to your friends and prevent any
violence before it take place. The app is completely simple to use. It has
icons that are easy to push. Whenever you find yourself in any bad situation,
just push the “ask my circle to” button. Now, three icons will pop up on your
device screen. The car icon would send a message to your friends saying “Come
and get me. I need help getting home safely.” Plus, using GPS, the app will
send your location to all the friends.
Nirbhaya
is a Hindi word which means fearless. This application is a tribute to brave
Delhi-rape incident girl. Nirbhaya is capable of handling emergency situations
and capable of sending notifications to pre-assigned contacts like your name,
type of emergency situation along with your physical GPS location over text messages.

import any contact from your phonebook. Application supports lots of widgets

You
can turn your phone into an extremely useful safety device by simply installing
the app called Life 360 Family Locator. This Android application lets you to
track the exact location of a person using the latest GPS technology. The app
supports a single click panic alarm for emergencies. As soon as you press the

when any family member reach particular locations, save your most frequently
visited places, view sex offenders and recent crimes in close nearness, track
the lost or misplaced phones, etc.
Fight
back is India’s very first mobile app designed for women’s security. It
launched by a non-profit organization called Why Poll back in the year 2011.
This safety app allows the users to right away alert friends and family members
in case of any emergencies. It is a paid app and it works with all smart phones
including Samsung, Nokia, HTC, and Blackberry, as well as java based feature
phones. The app, currently available from Nokia Store, uses SMS, GPS, GPRS,
location maps, email, even your Face book account to notify your family or
friends that you are in an emergency situation. The user can add maximum of
five emergency contacts to the list. As soon as you press the Panic Button from
the app, the alerts page would get updated with the live alert data also it
will display the location of the alert on the Google Map.
SOS
Whistle is really one of the best apps available for women’s security. It is
quite different from other security applications, as this app does not send an
SOS or let your family members or friends know that you are in danger. Instead,
as its name would suggest, the app makes a whistling sound. The sound is loud
and good enough to let other passersby notice you in case of any threat. The
app is very much easy to use. There is no need of a data connection or GPS
service to make use of this application. All you have to do is just press the
whistle icon to start whistling and then press again the same icon to stop it.
Moreover, the app provides a Light function that enables the users to hide the
whistle icon, so that you get an icon-less display which when pressed makes the
same loud whistle sound.
